{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences dangerous incident with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his damaged front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track track officials can be allowed to just dash across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the FIA
"On lap three, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
