British Broadens Methanol Toxicity Warning List with Eleven Nations
The UK government has added 11 further nations to its travel warning roster concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol poisoning from tainted alcoholic drinks.
The expanded advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Only last month, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to multiple serious cases such as the fatal loss of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that even tiny quantities of methanol can result in blindness or death within 12 to 48 hours.
Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?
Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol often utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not designed for drinking.
While it is inherently formed during the creation of beverages, licensed producers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the refining procedure.
However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to identify.
Authorities' Advice for Travelers
Foreign Office minister a senior official stated that each tourist should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.
"While having drinks abroad, choose reputable establishments and avoid local brews or complimentary drinks," the official warned.
"In case something appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's way worse than typical or sight issues – seek medical attention fast."
The complete list of destinations listed as posing a risk of methanol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
